Captain Joshua Slocum takes his yawl, Spray through Sydney Heads on a sunny summer afternoon. It is 6 December 1896, 18 months from the time he departed from Boston, on his historic single-handed voyage around the world. The story of this voyage is told in his epic book, Sailing Alone Around the World.
Spray started out on the voyage as a cutter but whilst in Sydney she was re rigged as a yawl with a new set of sails donated by Commodore Foy of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.
Captain Slocum sailed north, through Torres Strait and on into the Indian Ocean, rounding the Cape of Good Hope at Christmas 1897. Continuing up through the Atlantic he arrived at his home port of Boston on 27 June 1898.
