Rani and Salt Air lead the schooner Mistral out of Sydney Harbour on the occasion of the first Sydney to Hobart yacht race in 1945. Rani went on to win the race in a field of nine yachts.

While the 1945 race was the forerunner of the now world-famous ocean race, it was then little more than a cruise to Hobart by a group of local yachtsmen.

I was out in a small boat at the time and witnessed the start off the Quarantine Station near Manly. There were very few other boats around to give them a send-off, unlike the hundreds that clog the harbour for present day starts.
