This painting was the result of my travels around the New England region of the US gathering information about North American sail and the large wooden fishing schooners known as the ‘Grand Bankers’, that sailed out of Gloucester and other ports on the east coast of the US and Canada, to the fishing grounds known as the ‘Grand Banks’ off Newfoundland. These waters were relatively shallow and were a rich fishing ground. These schooners sailed out to the banks and the fishermen were put over the side in ‘dories’- a small one or two man craft to fish for cod and halibut using hand lines.
Many of the ports that I visited had maritime museums with material a plenty. I found one or two ship-yards still building large wooden boats, mainly yachts and I was able to absorb the atmosphere and to sniff the delightful aroma of freshly-sawn pine.
Arthur D.Story was one of the leading builders of these schooners in the late 19th century and when I came upon a yard engaged in wooden boat building I was able to visualise his yard with a grand banks schooner under construction. In this painting I have depicted Arthur pointing out to his client the progress that had been made since his last visit.
To compose this scene I used parts of different photographs and sketches that I took at various locations.
